Judith Davis, the Parent Teacher Student Association (PTSA) President during a board meeting identified the teen as Sergio Flores.
“Every single one of you knew this day would come. Say his name: Sergio Flores,” she said during a meeting with school officials. “He died. This kid is not going back to his family. The lack of leadership and inaction resulted in what happened Tuesday, and what happened today.”
The Arlington County Police Department announced on Friday, Feb. 3, that they are conducting a death investigation after the teen died at the hospital following an overdose at Wakefield High School earlier this week.
Flores was remembered as a “sweet, caring person, (and) someone who showed what real love was either family or friend-wise,” his cousin Lesly Nunez wrote in a GoFundMe fundraising campaign set up for his parents.
“He was someone that made everyone laugh. He always had jokes … He always wanted to put a smile on his friends and family’s faces.
Flores’ death came after police were called shortly before 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 31 to the high school to assist an unresponsive boy inside a bathroom. He was treated by emergency personnel at the scene and transported to an area hospital, where he died on Thursday, Feb. 2.
"Where's the accountability?" Davis said. "Do better. Stop celebrating yourself and talk to the community, talk to the parents, talk to the students."
The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner will now conduct an autopsy to determine the cause and manner of Flores' death, according to police.
